Paper Mache Ice Cream Cones

This was a fun 3-day project: On Day One we used cups and cones along with newspaper and tinfoil to make an armature. On Day Two we added a layer of paper mache using white copy paper. And on Day Three we got to paint our ice cream cones to display our favorite flavors. What flavors do you see represented in these cones?

Here's a great image of painter Wayne Thibauld's Ice Cream Cones. Food is such a fun and whimsical subject.

Large Scale Monet Waterlily Paintings

Kindergarten and 1st Grade classes have been studying the famous painter, Claude Monet. We viewed and discussed his most-beloved waterlily paintings. Then we set to work, painting these gorgeous Monet-inspired cooperative murals.
Students in Mrs. Curkov's Kindergarten class working collaboratively on their second day of painting to finish their monstrous works of art!

Mixing our own colors gives our paintings
more variety and complexity.

Those paints look really clean. Nice job
washing and drying off your brush...

Our First Projects in the Art Studio!

We've been having a great time this month in the Art Room. We started off with a school-wide project where each student drew and painted a self-portrait. I've worked hard hanging up each one of these beautiful and creative works. Notice how they are all so wonderfully different!

Once students finished their portraits, each grade level started focusing on LINES through three different projects using oil pastels, watercolor and tempera cake paints.

Kindergartners have been creating shooting stars that truly burst with a variety of line:

1st Graders have started a large scale mixed media painting exploring the relationship between shape and line:

2nd Graders have practiced using lines and shapes to draw images of Owls. Students have been using their Owls as vehicles to demonstrate pattern through the use of line:

Welcome to the UMS Art Studio

For our first class, we discussed expectations in the Art Studio and got to design our sketch folders. I also put in a lot of effort to learn everyone's name (I'm still working on it).

In order to get to know my students better, and see how they present themselves to the world, our first project will be focused on the art of the self-portrait. We'll talk about the proportion of the face as well as the specific shapes that make up our eyes, nose, and mouth. Here are a couple of works in progress from Mrs. Howard's 2nd Graders:
